Dr. Mark Mitchell Jones is a double board certified surgeon in Atlanta who is qualified to perform successful otoplasty surgery for ear deformities. With his extensive experience and specialized training in both plastic surgery and otolaryngology (ENT), Dr. Jones can intricately reconstruct the external ear form and shape without compromising the function of the inner ear.
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that is often used to correct congenital ear deformities, such as Big Ears or Dumbo Ears. It is a common surgery performed on thousands of patients in the United States every year. There are many different anatomical types of deformities, and Dr. Jones customizes his techniques to suit the individual. These procedures are usually performed when the patient is between five and six years old, just before entering first grade, but can be performed any time after that as well. Early correction can help your child avoid psychological distress, as Big Ear deformities are commonly teased among school-aged children.
Dr. Jones combines different otoplasty techniques in order to prevent reoccurence. It is equivalent to the “not putting all your eggs in one basket” so that redos are very rare. Dr. Jones once had a model from Denmark who was dissatisfied after 5 ear otoplasties in Europe. She was requesting corrective surgery of only 2 mm which he was able to accomplish for her.
Otoplasty is usually an outpatient procedure
In most cases, otoplasty is an outpatient procedure. Depending on the length and complexity of the procedure, patients either undergo general anesthesia ( “asleep” through the entire operation) or under local anesthesia (numbs similarly to the way a dentist frequently anesthetizes the teeth prior to dental work). Typically, children are sedated to eliminate anxiety, and adults can have their choice. A head bandage is worn for a week, followed by wearing a headband at night for a month. Dr. Jones will make sure you receive superior follow-up care and that the most natural, ideal results are achieved.
